For Standard Pacific Homes
and DUC Housing Partners in Hayward, Alameda County, Sycamore
Associates LLC designed a comprehensive water quality management plan to treat
the project’s stormwater discharges
into Alameda Creek as it empties into the San Francisco Baylands.
Sycamore
sized the two-tiered water quality basin to treat stormwater
for both residential and industrial sites, incorporated biofilters
throughout the entire residential site plan, and designed
treatment swales to meet specific hydraulic flow criteria for
the industrial site. Each of these treatment Best Management Practices (BMPs) were also designed
to be compatible with landscape aesthetics and to be responsive
to liability and nuisance concerns. Sycamore prepared water quality
source control measures for inclusion in the Covenants, Codes,
and Restrictions for the property.
Homeowner
educational materials designed by Sycamore included a water
quality protection brochure, a special-status species predator
management plan, and associated interpretive exhibits for display
adjacent to the preserved wetlands in the development.

Assisted creekside landowners through the Redwood
City Public Works Department's Urban Creek Restoration
Program with a number of creek related issues, including bank
failure and establishment of an education program regarding stewardship
along the riparian corridor. Grant funds were identified and
applied for, particularly those addressing specific restoration
projects that included habitat enhancement for fisheries and
other aquatic riparian species. Technical assistance was provided
to land owners wishing to use bioengineering and other natural
techniques that address erosion control.
